If a line slopes downward when you move from left to right the line has a negative slope. When a line has a negative slope the two variables move in opposite directions. If x increases then y decreases. The variables involved could be any of the following:
x and y
Independent variable and dependent variable
 Cause and effect
Input and output

When a line slopes upward when you move from left to right the line has a positive slope  As a result when y increases so does x. When a line has a positive slope the two variables move in the same direction.
The variables involved could be any of the following:
x and y
Independent variable and dependent variable
Cause and effect
Input and output
